My dogs are an integral part of the family—protectors, companions, even comic relief. As we were baking holiday cookies, I realized my fuzzy kids needed some holiday cheer, too. So, my daughter (Miss E) opened up Pinterest and went to work looking for the ultimate dog cookie. As with everything on Pinterest, there are tons of dog cookie recipes. Where to start? I personally like simplicity and healthy ingredients. We opted for recipes with six or fewer ingredients and one of those ingredients needed to be pumpkin. I don’t like to waste things and I still have pumpkins on my porch!
This recipe says to use a cookie cutter—I generally don’t have time for this, but it’s the holidays so it was allowed. Miss E raided the cupboards and found a candy cane cookie cutter, because you know, the dogs will be able to tell the difference. Dog treats are very forgiving, unlike some other recipes for baked goods. If quantities are slightly off, the end result is still wonderful, which makes this a fun recipe for kids to try. Enjoy!
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine 2 1/3 cups flour, 1 tsp. baking powder, 1 cut finely chopped apple, 1/2 cup pumpkin puree, 1 egg and 1/4 cup water. The batter will be thick, which came as a surprise to Miss E, but is necessary if you are using a cookie cutter (this recipe could also be done as a drop cookie, but additional baking time might be needed). Roll the dough to about 1/4″ thick on a heavily floured surface. Then, transfer to a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake about 30 minutes or until crisp. Cool completely then share with your fuzzy friends.
When you make dog treats from scratch you must remember that there are no preservatives and they can go bad quickly. I keep about 1/3 in a box in the refrigerator. I put the remaining 2/3 into boxes and freeze. They only take a short amount of time to defrost when you need them. Because all of the ingredients are common things found around your home, these are safe for your family to try as well. However, Miss E says they really don’t taste like much!
