What's New This Week Sept. 9-16

Greetings from Lemon Street Market!

Store News:
Our End of Summer Sale Continues! We'll have many items in the store discounted, as well as our locally-made cedar Succulent Frames--now 10% off! Some discounted items may be discontinued, so be sure to let us know if you want us to carry a discounted item in the future. We appreciate your feedback!

Back in Stock: We restocked organic potting soil from Eastern Pennsylvania company Organic Mechanics. Also, honey from The Family Cow should be back in on Thursday afternoon; and, in case you happened to stop by on the one day that we were out of Neat, we are now fully stocked.

New Item: Potted organic living herbs! If you cook often, you know how essential having fresh herbs available year-round is in making delicious meals! Choose from fresh basil, cilantro, and Italian parsley--perfectly sized to plant in an indoor herb garden, or just place them near a sunny kitchen window as the temps cool.

Upcoming Store Events:
What: Cheese Stretching Party with Caputo Brothers Creamery and Essen
When: Wednesday, September 18: 7PM-9PM
Where: Lemon Street Market
Cost: $45; includes a container of cheese curds to take home, ready-to-be-stretched
Back by Popular Demand! Yes. You. Can. Hand-stretched, local, fresh cheese in the comfort of your home. Join Essen as we welcome Rynn Caputo from Caputo Brothers Creamery, based in neighboring York county. Rynn and her husband Dave have turned the fresh cow's milk cheese world in the United States upside down with their "real" ricotta, fresh mozzarella, burrata, stracciatella and more; supplying most of the Top Ten restaurants in New York City and Philadelphia with their artisan treasures. Rynn will take us through the steps to transform their local cheese curds into a variety of fresh cheeses at home and turn a simple meal into a party. Of course, we'll be tasting. And, yes, there's always more: we'll send you home with a bag of Caputo's curds. Sounds like a great idea for a party! This workshop is naturally gluten-free. Advance registration required. Contact Betsey at Essen to register: betsey@essencooking.com or sign up via Essen's website: www.essencooking.com.

What: Paw Paw Tasting with Harvey's Gardens
When: Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22: 11AM-4PM
Where: Lemon Street Market parking lot
Cost: Free!
Stop by Lemon Street Market on Saturday, Sept. 21, and Sunday, Sept. 22, to celebrate this uniquely tropical-tasting native fruit. Sample fresh, locally grown paw paws, or purchase a paw-paw tree to take home to plant in your garden. We'll have paw paw smoothies, muffins, and ice cream available for sale as well (while supplies last), so you'll be able to experience first-hand "America's Forgotten Fruit." Unfamiliar with the indigenous paw paw? The flavor is part mango, part banana, and it lends itself well to eating out-of-hand or baking--try Paw Paw pie filling or homemade ice cream (find info and recipes in the New York Times article links here:www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2011/09/30/140933404/where-to-get-your-taste-of-the-pawpaw and here: www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2011/09/29/140894570/the-pawpaw-foraging-for-americas-forgotten-fruit.) We hope to see you for this fun, family-friendly event!

What's New in Produce: We just received another shipment of specialty Pink Pearl apples, a tart eating apple that looks great sliced into a salad--we love the contrast between it's brown skin and vibrant pink flesh. Quantities are limited, so get them while you can! We also received our first shipment of US grown, certified organic red Bartlett pears and ever-popular honey crisp apples. The availability of some local seasonal items are slowing down, like local sweet corn, red slicing tomatoes, peaches, cucumbers, and US grown blueberries--so expect more limited quantities as we move later into the week. However, we are still getting a good supply of local heirloom tomatoes from several different farms, and greens like kale, collards, chard, salad mix, and arugula remain strong. Look for local red bell peppers, carrots, garlic, beets, winter squash, potatoes, onions, and new watermelon radishes throughout the week as well!

From our Cafe: The Lemon Street Market Cafe offers exclusively locally-sourced and/or organic ingredients on our menu, fresh-pressed vegetable and fruit juices made from only organic produce, sustainable to-go packaging, and fair-trade organic coffee and teas. Our sandwiches and salads feature the organic produce and deli meats sold in our store, local artisan breads and bagels, and condiments from our local vendors. Our expanded smoothie menu allows you to add fresh, local fruit (in season) and local Fiddle Creek yogurt to any smoothie combination. Now that there's that little chill in the air most mornings, be sure to stop by on your daily commute to check out our hot coffee, teas, and lattes.

We also offer other light, seasonal lunch items in our "to-go" fridge – look for fresh green or bean salads from the cafe, and other delicious items from your favorite local vendors, like Catering by Christina, Upohar, and Abundant Earth Kitchen. Also, look for hot soup during weekdays (we are still working on the Tuesday soup vendor). We're open Monday-Saturday from 7:00am-3:30pm, Sundays 9:00am-3:30pm, and all day until 8:00pm on First Fridays.
